Palermo Port Day Trips

Visiting Palermo on your Mediterranean cruise trip?

Be sure to check out these Palermo port day trips and make your plans for an exciting adventure ashore.

  • Mondello beach is about 10 minutes drive away. Beware of the cab companies offering taxi’s right outside the ship. We paid a whopping 60 Euros for a 10 minute return trip to Mondello, not realizing how close it was. If you walk a bit further into town you will get a better deal or take the no 806 bus from Piazza Sturzo.

The beach itself is beautiful however it is packed in the summer months. So packed with beds, chairs and umbrellas you can hardly see the beach at all! There is a locals section of the beach and a tourist section where you are charged a fairly hefty whack for a bed or chair.

Having said all that, the sea is to die for, turquoise blue and totally clear, it’s a joy to swim in. Right outside the main tourist entrance is a little café – be sure to try the local speciality – the cannoli. It’s a brioche sandwich with ice cream in the middle (loads of flavours) and its delicious.

  • Monreale – about 6 miles west of Palermo, sitting on the hill with a great view back towards the city and the sea lies Monreale with its magnificent cathedral. Get bus 389 from Piazza indipendenza next to the Palatine Chapel.

  • Cefalu - Just one hour's drive east of Palermo, sitting serenely between its natural bay and the towering rocky granite mass of La Rocca, is Cefalu, with its sandy beaches, winding Medieval streets flanked with all manner of shops, excellent restaurants serving the freshest of fish and its unique Norman cathedral.
